If you want magic, we’ve got to go back to the Otis Redding days, when it was live-to-mono with no overdubs. After a take, the guys couldn’t wait to go into the control room to hear back what they just played. That was magic. Al Jackson would listen to the take and say, “Boys, all that needs is out.”
