POST # 605 Charles Mingus on Appreciating Art

You haven’t been told before that you’re phonies. You’re here because jazz has publicity, jazz is popular…You like to associate yourself with this sort of thing. But it doesn’t make you a connoisseur of the art because you follow it around…A blind man can go to an exhibition of Picasso and Kline, and not even see their works, and comment behind dark glasses, ‘Wow! They’re the swingingest paintings ever, crazy!’ Well, so can you. You’ve got your dark glasses and clogged up ears.

According to Buddy Guy, Earl Hooker was the first player to realize that the Fender Bassman amp gave a fatter and more overdriven sound than Fender's other guitar combos.

Buddy Guy switched from the Les Paul to Strat after his guitar was stolen from a club.

POST # 600 EBAY PRICE GUIDE : DON GROSH SET NECK BRAZILIAN QUILT CUSTOM GUITAR

Gorgeous maple top on this hand built guitar with Brazilian Rosewood Fingerboard to boot.
Scroll down to see how much it sold for. Here's the blurb from the seller.

GORGOUS DON GROSH HAND-BUILD SET NECK
EARLY MODEL, AMAZING QUILT TOP

If you are familiar with Don Grosh's custom builds then you know what you are about to see described. If not, then you don't know what you've been missing.

An amazingly talented luthier, this is a custom hand-built guitar that will put any Les Paul (original or clone) to shame. The guitar plays better than it looks, and that is saying something. Quilted maple top, with a rare Brazilian Rosewood Fingerboard. Ebony headstock veneer.

Incredible tone, worthy of the Don Grosh name. This guitar was built with an attention to detail that cannot be described. Incredible note articulation and sustain. Everything you ever wanted in a Don Grosh Set-neck which is one of the rarest and most expensive models he builds. The owner of this guitar will have difficulty putting it down!

The pictures tell the story. Excellent condition, with some minor surface rash in the back wood that cn be buffed out, and is too fine to show up in close up Macro photographs. I tried. When was the last time you saw a Grosh Set Neck with a Brazilian fretboard for less than $4,000? Well, here is your chance to get one....there is never going to be another made like it by Don for a comparable price...that's for sure.

Will be shipped as shown with its original case. No COA, but I will include the full spec sheet that was emailed to me by Don (pictured). Free shipping in CON-USA, international buyers welcome, but please be aware that shipping will be at cost, using Fed Ex international economy. Use the international price in description below as a guide only...exact price will be passed along.

Check my feedback, and buy with confidence. Fully guaranteed to be received as described, and full refund (return shipping at buyer's expense) if the guitar is not 100% as described

On Mar-05-11 at 06:48:54 PST, seller added the following information:

I JUST DID A TOTAL THOROUGH INSPECTION OF THE GUITAR FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. I PROBABLY OVERSTATED THE DEGREE OF RASH ON THE BACK WOOD. HOWEVER, THERE IS A TINY, NEARLY IMPERCEPTIBLE INDENTATION ON THE LOWER EDGE OF THE GUITAR...POSSIBLY A SURFACE IMPRESSION IN THE WOOD THAT WAS THERE WHEN IT CAME FROM THE FACTORY. IT WILL NOT PHOTOGRAPH! I TRIED. SINCE I ADVERTISE MY GUITARS AS 100% RETURNS IF NOT ACCURATELY DESCRIBED, I WANTED TO ADD THIS "BLEMISH" WHICH MOST PEOPLE WOULD NEVER SEE, BUT WHICH (IN MY OPINION) IS THE ONLY REAL FACTOR THAT KEEPS IT FROM BEING LISTED AS MINT. IT'S NOT A BIG ISSUE AT ALL...I JUST BELIEVE IN 100% DISCLOSURE. I HAVE SEEN GUITARS COME FROM THE FACTORY WITH MANY MORE MARKS THAN THIS, BUT I WANT THE BUYER TO BE TOTALLY SATISFIED WITH THEIR PURCHASE. DID I SAY THIS GUITAR PLAYS OUTSTANDING, WITH NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER???

POST # 593 Steve Cropper on Changing Strings and Robben Ford

I never changed them until they broke. I’ve worked with a lot of great guitarists in the studio, and some of them—like Robben Ford—would change strings after every solo. That drove me nuts at the time. But maybe it wasn’t so bad, because I guess they could hear them going dead. My ears didn’t hear it—and I don’t know if the microphones heard it— but they heard it, so whatever made them happy. I don’t think Robben Ford still does that, but he still plays his kazoo off.

Early example of the Jazzmaster came with an anodised aluminium scratch plate.

Jazzmasters were introduced in 1958 and at $329 was $50 more expensive than the Strat.

It was the first guitar from Fender to feature a rosewood fingerboard.

The new 'lock-off' vibrato was to prevent tuning problems if a string breaks.

It also featured a new enlarged headstock design.

The Buzz Stop, a base plate with string-tension bar that bolts down to the Jazzmaster style tremolo can be installed to increase string pressure in the saddle to improve tone.

POST # 590 Did you know that Ray Butts' EchoSonic amps....

Ray Butts EchoSonic amps of the 1950's with its slapback echo sound was used by Scotty Moore, Carl Perkins, Chet Atkins, Luther Perkins (guitarist for Johnny Cash) and Roy Orbison.

The Echosonic was designed and hand-built by Ray Butts. While only 68 ever being built, the Echosonic found a unique place in history with a built-in tape echo (loop) unit. This patented tape loop echo system was one of the first guitar effects ever built, permanently installed in a high-quality custom-built guitar amp and speaker cabinet combo.

Vintage tube-powered echo effects include the Fender-distributed EccoFonic, Mastro Echoplex, Watkins/WEM Copicat, Binson Echorec and Meazzi Echomatic. You can hear Hank Garland play the opening phrase of Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces" with the EccoFonic.
